Nikon Coolpix 5200 Review

The CP5200 is a compact, stylish metal camera that can go anywhere. Its well built for the most part and the ergonomics are good. Performance is about average for a camera in this class. Beginners will love all the scene modes, though enthusiasts will be longing for manual focus, shutter speed, and aperture controls.

| The Nikon Coolpix 5200 offers a 5 megapixel resolution and a 3X optical zoom. The camera retains much of the design touches of previous models, but in a much thinner package. The thinner design is made possible by the use of SD (Secure Digital) memory cards, which are much smaller than the CompactFlash that have been a staple of Nikon cameras. (Note that the Coolpix is exclusively compatible with SD cards). |

| There's a lot to like about the Nikon Coolpix 5200: It's small, handy, and stylish, and it's jammed with great features. It takes reasonably sharp pictures. It could be speedier, though, and exposure and color-accuracy issues prevent it from receiving top honors. |

| The Nikon Coolpix 5200 is primarily meant as a point-and-shoot model. Although it has some manual control options, without a Manual mode, the user is limited to tweaking the Auto mode, instead. The camera is small and sleek, and is lightweight enough to be easily slid into the back pocket of a pair of pants. The meager body holds a 1/1.8-inch, 5.1 effective megapixel CCD, and a 1.5-inch LCD, which is a little on the small side. The fast menu controls makes this camera perfect for the point-and-shoot user looking for a camera with clean lines that’s easy to use. The Nikon Coolpix 5200 retails for approximately US$499.95. |

| Announced in February 2004 (alongside an otherwise identical 4MP camera, the Coolpix 4200), the Coolpix 5200 represents the latest in a long line of ever-smaller Nikon compact cameras that stretches all the way back to the late 1990's. Although the Coolpix 5200 echoes the basic design of the previous generation of Nikon Compacts (the 3200 and 4200), it is a good deal smaller, thanks no doubt to the use of an all-metal (Aluminum) body, rather than Nikon's more usual plastics. |

| The Coolpix 5200 is the latest in a line of user-friendly models that stretches back to the Coolpix 775 and 885, incorporating a wide range of Scene modes that set the camera up for specific picture-taking situations (such as "party," "beach," "fireworks," etc.). Special modes like these make it easy for novices to get usable photos in tricky situations, without having to take an advanced course in photography first. Based on the popularity of these models (the Coolpix 4300 has been particularly popular over the last year), it looks like Nikon is on the right track to meet the needs of the masses. |
